What Is Tensile Proof Load Testing?

  • Tensile proof load testing is a controlled mechanical test that applies a specified tensile force to a component to verify its structural integrity, performance characteristics and compliance with applicable standards.

Unlike operational or live load testing, tensile testing is typically performed in a laboratory or workshop environment using a calibrated test bed. The purpose is to:

    • Confirm that a component withstands a specified proof load without permanent deformation
    • Validate manufacturer design calculations
    • Demonstrate compliance with applicable safety standards
    • Support CE / UKCA marking technical file requirements
    • Provide traceable documentation for lifting accessories and safety components

Tensile proof testing is commonly used for lifting accessories, chains, eyebolts, fabricated assemblies and other safety-critical components where documented performance verification is required.

For operational or on-site load testing, please refer to our Proof Load Testing page.

Our Tensile Testing Facility

  • Our Manchester testing facility includes:

    • 100-tonne capacity computer-controlled horizontal tensile test bed
    • NPL-certified calibrated load cells
    • Digitally controlled test application and recording systems
    • Controlled load application and hold periods
    • Digital data capture and reporting

This allows us to perform accurate and repeatable tensile proof load tests in a controlled environment with full documentation.

In addition to high-capacity tensile testing, we also utilise NPL-certified calibrated digital tensile dynamometers with read-outs from 1 to 12.5 tonnes for smaller components and field verification requirements.

Compliance, Standards & Technical File Support

  • Since 1995, machinery and lifting equipment placed on the market within Europe has been required to meet minimum safety requirements under the Machinery Directive.

In the UK, these requirements are implemented through:

    • Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008
    • Health and Safety Executive enforcement guidance

Manufacturers are required to undertake conformity assessment processes and compile technical files demonstrating compliance with relevant Essential Health and Safety Requirements (EHSRs).

    Technical files typically include:

    • Design drawings and control circuit schematics
    • Applicable standards and specifications
    • Test results and verification data
    • Declaration of Conformity or Declaration of Incorporation

    We can supply:

    • Proof load test reports
    • Crack detection reports
    • Destruction test data (where applicable)
    • Calibrated load verification records

These documents can be included within your technical file to demonstrate due diligence and structural verification.

Why Tensile Testing Is Required

  • Tensile proof load testing may be required to:

    • Validate design calculations for new lifting accessories
    • Verify performance of fabricated lifting points
    • Confirm compliance prior to CE / UKCA marking
    • Support third-party inspection requirements
    • Demonstrate structural integrity following modification or repair
    • Provide traceable documentation for high-risk or regulated industries

For higher-risk machinery categories, independent testing data may be required as part of conformity assessment.

Our testing services provide traceable, calibrated evidence of load performance suitable for regulatory and client audit requirements.

What Documentation Will You Receive?

  • Following tensile proof load testing, we can provide:

    • Formal tensile proof load test certificate
    • Load application data and recorded peak loads
    • Crack detection report (if applicable)
    • Destruction test data (if applicable)
    • Calibration traceability information

All reports are prepared for inclusion in manufacturer or project technical files and can support internal quality systems and external compliance audits.
