Safety Pallet Gates
Lifting Gear Products supplies MezzBarriers safety pallet gates for mezzanine floors, raised platforms and loading openings, giving continuous edge protection while pallets and goods are loaded by forklift, hoist or crane.
Our range covers standard, low headroom, extra wide, extra large, space-saving and custom-built mezzanine pallet gates. Each gate is designed to BS EN ISO 14122-3, bolts down without welding, and is available galvanised or in safety yellow.
How Safety Pallet Gates Work
A mezzanine floor needs an opening for goods to be loaded, but an open edge is a serious fall risk. A safety pallet gate solves this with two barriers linked together: when the gate is open to the loading side, the barrier on the operator side is closed, so the edge is never left open.
Goods are placed into the gate from below by forklift or hoist, and the gate is then operated to close the loading side and open the platform side, so staff can unload in safety.
MezzBarriers Safety Pallet Gate Range
Each MezzBarriers gate uses a different mechanism and size, so the right choice depends on the load, the headroom above the platform and the space around the opening.

| Gamma | Extra wide | 2000mm to 3500mm | 1800mm | Wider pallets and oversized loads |
| Titan | Extra large | 1500mm to 3500mm | 1800mm or 2200mm | Multiple pallets and deep loads up to 4000mm |
| Omega | Space saving | Up to 3000mm | 2500mm | Narrow walkways and smaller mezzanines |
| Hi-Gate | Open-top, custom built | Up to 2000mm | Unlimited | Crane, hoist and teagle loading |
| Sigma | Bespoke multi-purpose | Up to 3000mm | 2250mm | Mixed loading by forklift, hoist or vacuum lifter |
Atlas Mezzanine Pallet Gates
The Atlas is our standard mezzanine pallet gate, with a simple tip-over double-barrier mechanism that keeps one side closed at all times. It is sized for standard UK pallets, with inside widths of 1500mm or 1800mm.
Delta Low Headroom Pallet Gates
The Delta uses a dual-gate pivoting mechanism designed for mezzanines where headroom is limited, while still taking loads up to 2000mm high. It is available in inside widths from 1500mm to 3500mm.
Gamma Extra Wide and Titan Extra Large Pallet Gates
The Gamma extra wide pallet gate suits wider pallets and loads, with inside widths from 2000mm to 3500mm. For multiple pallets or deeper loads, the Titan extra large pallet gate offers inside depths up to 4000mm and load heights of 1800mm or 2200mm.
Omega Space Saving Pallet Gates
The Omega uses a balanced pull-down and push-up action with compact side frames, making it a good fit for narrow walkways, restricted loading bays and smaller mezzanines. It gives access to three sides of the pallet and takes loads up to 2500mm high.
Hi-Gate and Sigma Custom Built Pallet Gates
The Hi-Gate is an open-top scissor-action gate with no limit on load height, so it suits crane, hoist and teagle openings as well as forklift loading. An anti-slam damper is fitted as standard, and a low headroom version is also available.
The Sigma is a bespoke multi-purpose gate made to order for the opening, and it can be adapted for forklifts, overhead hoists, vacuum lifters and pallet trucks. The gate does not project beyond the platform edge in use.
Choosing the Right Safety Pallet Gate
To recommend a gate, we need a few measurements from the mezzanine and an idea of how it will be loaded:
- The size of the pallets or loads, including the tallest load height
- The headroom available above the gate position
- The width of the opening and any space either side for the gate frame
- How the gate will be loaded: forklift, hoist, crane or pallet truck
- The floor construction, such as timber board or concrete, for fixing
If the opening or load doesn’t suit a standard gate, the Hi-Gate, Omega and Sigma can be built to your dimensions.
Galvanised or Safety Yellow Finish
Most gates are available in two finishes. Galvanised gates are hot-dip galvanised to BS EN ISO 1461 for long-lasting corrosion resistance, and suit indoor and sheltered outdoor platforms. Safety yellow gates use thermoplastic-coated tube on a galvanised frame, making the loading point stand out clearly on a busy mezzanine.
Standards, Construction and Installation
MezzBarriers pallet gates are designed to BS EN ISO 14122-3:2016, which covers stairs, ladders and guard-rails as permanent means of access, and are CE marked. Every gate has a 1100mm handrail height and a 100mm aluminium kick plate to stop objects falling from the platform edge.
Gates are built from galvanised steel tube and tube clamps with stainless steel grub screws and nylon pivot bushes, so there is no welding and every part can be replaced. They are delivered part-assembled and bolted to the mezzanine floor with M12 bolts or anchors.
Optional extras include aluminium chequer floor plates, hi-vis hazard sleeves, safety netting for the gate edge and additional handrailing.
Mezzanine Handrails and Barriers
Pallet gates are usually installed as part of a wider mezzanine edge protection system. We also supply handrail tubes and clamps to build guard-rails around the platform, and warehouse barriers for protecting walkways and racking.
For pallet gates loaded by crane or hoist, see our hoists and jib cranes.
Safety Pallet Gates FAQs
-
What is a safety pallet gate?
A safety pallet gate is a two-sided barrier fitted at a mezzanine loading point. Goods are loaded into the gate from below, and the gate is then operated so the edge stays guarded while staff unload on the platform.
-
Are pallet gates a legal requirement on mezzanine floors?
The law requires open edges where people could fall to be protected, so a loading point on a mezzanine needs suitable edge protection while goods are loaded. A safety pallet gate is the usual way to do this, and HSE guidance refers to pallet gates as a recognised solution.
-
What standard should a mezzanine pallet gate meet?
Our MezzBarriers pallet gates are designed to BS EN ISO 14122-3:2016 and are CE marked, with a 1100mm handrail height and a 100mm kick plate.
-
What is a low headroom pallet gate?
A low headroom pallet gate is designed for mezzanines with limited space above the loading point. The MezzBarriers Delta uses a pivoting mechanism that needs less headroom while still taking loads up to 2000mm high.
-
What size pallet gate do I need?
The gate’s inside width and depth must be larger than the pallet or load, with clearance to place it safely. Standard UK pallets suit the Atlas 1500mm and 1800mm gates, while the Gamma and Titan suit wider, deeper or multiple pallets.
-
Can a pallet gate be loaded by crane or hoist?
Yes. The Hi-Gate has an open top with no limit on load height, so it suits crane, hoist and teagle loading. The Sigma can also be adapted for overhead hoists and vacuum lifters.
-
Can you make a pallet gate to fit our opening?
Yes. The Hi-Gate, Omega and Sigma are built to your dimensions, and other gates can be modified through our quote system.
-
What is the difference between galvanised and safety yellow pallet gates?
Galvanised gates are fully hot-dip galvanised for maximum corrosion resistance. Safety yellow gates have thermoplastic-coated gate tubes on a galvanised frame, making the loading point more visible.
-
Can pallet gates be used outdoors?
Galvanised MezzBarriers gates are suitable for indoor and covered or sheltered outdoor platforms.
-
How are pallet gates installed?
Gates are delivered part-assembled and bolted down to the mezzanine floor with M12 bolts or anchors. No welding or hot works are needed.
-
Can pallet gate parts be replaced?
Yes. MezzBarriers gates are assembled from tube, clamps and replaceable components rather than welded, so a damaged part can be replaced without changing the whole gate.
-
Why are pallet gates price on request?
Most gates are built to order to suit the opening, finish and options, so we price each one once we know your requirements.
