Frequently Asked Questions About Statutory Inspection Services
-
What is the difference between on-site and off-site statutory inspection?
On-site inspection is carried out at the equipment’s working location and is typically used for fixed lifting systems such as cranes or runway beams.
Off-site inspection involves collecting portable lifting equipment or accessories and examining them in controlled workshop conditions where specialist testing or detailed assessment may be required. -
How often must lifting equipment be statutorily inspected?
Most lifting accessories and equipment used to lift people must be inspected every 6 months,
while other lifting equipment is normally inspected every 12 months.
Inspection intervals may vary where a written examination scheme specifies alternative frequencies -
Can lifting accessories be inspected off-site?
Yes. Lifting accessories such as chain slings, wire rope slings and shackles are often inspected off-site to allow thorough examination, measurement of wear and load testing where required.
-
What happens if defects are found during inspection?
If a defect is identified that could present a danger, the equipment must be withdrawn from service until repairs or replacement are completed.
The defect will be formally documented within the inspection report along with recommended corrective actions. -
Do cranes require load testing at every statutory inspection
Routine load testing is not always required. The competent person will determine whether testing is necessary based on risk assessment, equipment condition, operating environment and manufacturer guidance.
-
Who is responsible for arranging statutory inspections?
The duty holder, typically the employer, site operator or equipment owner, is responsible for ensuring lifting equipment is inspected at required intervals and that records are maintained.
