Webbing Slings
Lifting Gear Products supplies duplex webbing slings for lifting flat-sided, boxed and finished loads where a wide, soft bearing surface is needed, across manufacturing, construction, logistics and engineering applications throughout the UK.
Our PlumAlti web slings are made in the UK from high-tenacity polyester webbing and colour coded by Working Load Limit. Ready-made duplex web slings from 1t to 10t WLL are available to buy online, with bespoke lengths up to 120t WLL made to order.
What Is a Duplex Webbing Sling?
A webbing sling, also called a web sling or flat sling, is made from flat woven polyester webbing with a soft lifting eye at each end. A duplex webbing sling uses two layers of webbing stitched together, which makes it stronger and harder wearing than a single-layer (simplex) sling of the same width.
The wide, flat surface spreads the load over a larger area, reducing pressure on the load and helping to keep it stable during the lift.

Webbing Sling Colour Codes
Each webbing sling is colour coded by its Working Load Limit for a straight lift, and carries a blue polyester label showing its WLL, length, serial number and mode factors.
| WLL (straight lift) | Webbing sling colour |
|---|---|
| 1t | Violet |
| 2t | Green |
| 3t | Yellow |
| 4t | Grey |
| 5t | Red |
| 6t | Brown |
| 8t | Blue |
| 10t | Orange |
When to Use a Webbing Sling
Webbing slings are the best choice for:
- Flat-sided, boxed or crated loads
- Panels, sheets and long loads that need a stable, wide contact area
- Finished, painted or easily marked surfaces
- Loads that need to be lifted in a basket hitch, where the flat webbing sits evenly under the load
Webbing slings can be used in straight, choke and basket hitches, with the Working Load Limit adjusted using the mode factors on the label. For cylindrical or irregular loads, a round sling usually grips better.
Protecting Webbing Slings
The stitching and lifting eyes are the parts of a webbing sling most at risk, so check them closely before every lift. Use wear sleeves or corner protectors wherever the sling passes over an edge, don’t twist or knot the sling, and keep it away from temperatures above 100°C and from alkaline chemicals.
To connect webbing slings to a hook or chain system, use a fitting wide enough for the eye to sit flat without bunching, such as a web sling shackle from our lifting shackles range or a webbing coupling from our sling components.
Webbing Sling Standards and Inspection
Our PlumAlti duplex webbing slings are made to BS EN 1492-1, with a 7:1 safety factor, a maximum elongation of 3% under load and an operating range of -40°C to +100°C.
Webbing slings with cuts, abrasion, damaged stitching, worn eyes, heat or chemical damage, or a missing label should be taken out of service. As lifting accessories, they also need a thorough examination by a competent person under LOLER, at least every six months.
Webbing Slings FAQs
-
What is a webbing sling?
A webbing sling is a flat lifting sling made from woven polyester webbing, with a soft lifting eye at each end. It is also known as a web sling or flat sling.
-
What does duplex mean on a web sling?
Duplex means the sling is made from two layers of webbing stitched together. This gives a stronger, more hard-wearing sling than a single-layer simplex web sling of the same width.
-
Should I use a webbing sling or a round sling?
Use a webbing sling for flat-sided, boxed or panel loads where a wide, stable bearing surface helps. Use a round sling for cylindrical or irregular loads where the sling needs to wrap closely around the load.
-
What do the colours on webbing slings mean?
The colour shows the Working Load Limit for a straight lift: violet 1t, green 2t, yellow 3t, grey 4t, red 5t, brown 6t, blue 8t and orange 10t.
-
What is the safety factor of a webbing sling?
Our PlumAlti duplex webbing slings have a 7:1 safety factor, so the minimum breaking strength is seven times the Working Load Limit.
-
Can you make webbing slings to a custom length?
Yes. We supply bespoke length duplex webbing slings from 1t up to 120t WLL, made to order and priced on request.
-
What should I connect a webbing sling to?
Use a shackle, hook or coupling wide enough for the sling eye to sit flat without bunching, such as a web sling shackle or webbing coupling. A narrow fitting concentrates the load and can damage the eye.
-
When should a webbing sling be taken out of service?
Remove a webbing sling from service if it has cuts, abrasion, damaged or broken stitching, worn eyes, heat or chemical damage, or a missing or unreadable label.
