Crane and Gantry Systems

Different lifting applications require different types of crane or gantry. The most suitable system will depend on factors including the load weight, required Working Load Limit (WLL), lifting frequency, available space, lifting height, reach and whether the equipment needs to be fixed, mobile or portable.

Jib Cranes

Jib cranes provide a dedicated lifting point for lifting, positioning and moving loads within a defined working area. They can be particularly useful for repetitive lifting around machinery, production lines, workstations, loading areas and maintenance facilities.

Our range includes floor-mounted, free-standing, wall-mounted, articulated and powered jib cranes, with different lifting capacities, reaches, rotation and mounting configurations available.

We supply jib crane systems from manufacturers including Donati and Lifts All, with solutions available for applications ranging from lightweight workstation lifting through to heavier industrial lifting.

Lifting Davits

Lifting davits and davit cranes provide a compact lifting solution where a dedicated lifting point is required but a larger crane system isn’t practical. Portable davits can also be installed and removed from suitable mounting points, allowing lifting equipment to be used at different designated locations.

Our range includes portable lifting davits with different WLLs, mounting arrangements and winch configurations, including manual and electric options. Davits can be useful for maintenance, utilities, water treatment, industrial equipment handling and other applications where a compact lifting system is required.

We supply THERN lifting davit cranes in a range of configurations, with specialist and bespoke solutions also available where required.

Overhead Crane Systems

Overhead crane systems provide a more extensive lifting solution where loads need to be moved across a workshop, production area, warehouse or other defined working space.

Our range includes modular aluminium and steel crane systems, monorail systems, bridge cranes, overhead travelling cranes and underslung crane systems, with options for different spans, lifting capacities, headroom requirements and working environments.

Working alongside our divisional partner Dale Lifting & Handling Specialists, we can provide solutions ranging from individual crane components and modular systems through to complete bespoke overhead crane installations designed around the building and operational requirements.

Portable Gantries

Portable gantries provide a flexible lifting point where a permanent overhead crane or fixed lifting system isn’t practical or where lifting equipment needs to be moved between locations.

Our range includes steel mobile gantries, workshop gantries and lightweight aluminium portable gantries, with different WLLs, spans, heights and configurations available. Depending on the model, portable gantries can be used with compatible beam trolleys and manual or powered hoists.

Portable gantries can be useful for workshops, maintenance areas, engineering applications, construction sites and temporary lifting operations.

Choosing the Right Crane or Gantry

The right lifting system depends on how and where the load needs to be lifted rather than simply selecting equipment based on capacity.

When choosing a crane or gantry, consider:

  • Load weight and WLL – the complete lifting arrangement must have a suitable rated capacity for the intended load
  • Lifting frequency – repetitive production lifting may benefit from a fixed or dedicated crane system
  • Reach and working area – consider how far the load needs to be moved and the area that needs to be covered
  • Available headroom – restricted vertical space may influence the type of crane or lifting system required
  • Installation – consider whether the system needs to be floor-mounted, wall-mounted, supported from the building structure or completely portable
  • Mobility – portable or mobile equipment can be useful where lifting requirements change between locations
  • Hoist compatibility – the crane, gantry, hoist, trolley and lifting accessories all need to be suitable for the intended application
  • Working environment – indoor, outdoor, corrosive, confined or demanding environments may require different equipment and materials

For more complex lifting requirements, the supporting structure and complete lifting arrangement should be considered rather than selecting the crane or gantry in isolation.

Fixed, Mobile or Portable Lifting Systems

One of the main differences between crane systems is how they are installed and used.

Fixed lifting systems such as jib cranes and overhead crane systems can provide a dedicated lifting solution where equipment is used regularly in the same location.

Portable and mobile systems such as lifting davits and portable gantries can provide greater flexibility where lifting is required at different locations or where a permanent installation isn’t practical.

The most suitable arrangement will depend on the frequency of lifting, available space, load requirements and how the equipment needs to be positioned.

Bespoke Crane and Gantry Solutions

Standard crane and gantry systems can provide effective solutions for many applications, but some lifting requirements need to be designed around the load, building or working environment.

Working alongside our divisional partner Dale Lifting & Handling Specialists, we can provide bespoke lifting solutions from initial requirements and design through to manufacture, testing and installation where required.

This can include:

  • Bespoke jib cranes
  • Overhead crane systems
  • Support gantries
  • Specialist lifting frames
  • Custom lifting structures
  • Site-specific lifting solutions
  • Crane and hoist integration

Solutions can be designed around factors such as load capacity, span, reach, headroom, building structure, lifting frequency and available working space.

Crane and Gantry Inspection and LOLER

Cranes, gantries and associated lifting equipment should be appropriately selected, installed, maintained and inspected for their intended application.

Depending on the equipment and how it is used, lifting equipment may be subject to the requirements of the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations (LOLER). Thorough examination and inspection can help identify damage, deformation, excessive wear, corrosion and other conditions that could affect safe operation.

Our inspection and compliance services can support businesses with LOLER examinations and wider lifting equipment inspection requirements.

Crane and Gantry FAQs

  • What types of cranes and gantries do you supply?

Our range includes jib cranes, lifting davits, overhead crane systems and portable gantries, with different capacities, configurations and installation options available for industrial, manufacturing, engineering, maintenance and warehouse applications.

  • How do I choose the right crane or gantry?

Consider the load weight, required WLL, lifting frequency, reach, span, available headroom, working area and whether the equipment needs to be fixed, mobile or portable. The hoist and other lifting equipment used with the system should also be considered.

  • Can you provide bespoke crane and gantry systems?

Yes. Working alongside Dale Lifting & Handling Specialists, we can provide bespoke lifting solutions designed around specific load capacities, dimensions, building structures, working areas and operational requirements.

  • Can cranes and gantries be supplied with hoists?

Depending on the system, cranes and gantries can be configured or supplied for use with suitable manual, electric or pneumatic hoists. The hoist, trolley and crane or gantry must all be compatible with the intended lifting arrangement.

  • Do cranes and gantries require LOLER inspection?

Where LOLER applies to the equipment and its use, lifting equipment must be thoroughly examined at appropriate intervals and maintained in a safe condition. The specific requirements depend on the equipment and application.
